Mindfulness can be a form of meditation and a technique for personal as well as spiritual development. Mindfulness is a way of experiencing the world in a more conscious and intentional way. It enables us to be more aware of our thoughts, feelings, sensations, and surroundings. It is beneficial to our overall well-being as it helps us find inner peace, reduce stress, anxiety, depression and more!
The History Of Mindfulness
The concept of mindfulness originated in Buddhism and is an essential part of the Buddhist meditation practices. It was then adopted by psychologists and mental health professionals in the west as a way to improve mental health. In the 1970s, Jon Kabat-Zinn, a scientist, professor of medicine, and founder of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, began to integrate mindfulness into his patients' treatment plans. Since then, mindfulness has evolved and is now a widely accepted practice by mental health professionals and is also being integrated into mainstream society.
What Is Mindfulness All About?
At its core, mindfulness is about paying attention to the present moment, with purpose and non-judgemental awareness. It enables us to observe our thoughts, feelings and situation without judgment and resistance, allowing us to become more accepting of ourselves and our experiences.

A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that mindfulness-based stress reduction was an effective treatment for depression and anxiety. Additionally, another study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy was equally effective as medication in preventing relapse of depression. Mindfulness also improves cognitive function, attention, and memory, as well as increasing overall well-being.
How To Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness can be practiced through a variety of techniques, including meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises. One of the most popular and accessible forms of mindfulness meditation is a body scan meditation. In this practice, one lies down or sits comfortably and focuses on each part of their body, starting from the toes and moving up to the head. By focusing on each part of the body, one becomes more aware of physical sensations, and by incorporating breath, the practice deepens.
Another type of mindfulness meditation is focused attention meditation. In this practice, one focuses on a single object, such as the breath or a mantra. If the mind starts to wander, one brings it back to the object of focus. This practice helps train the mind to stay focused and present.
A third type of mindfulness meditation is open monitoring meditation. In this practice, one observes their thoughts as they arise, without judgment. By becoming aware of thoughts, one is less likely to get caught up in them. This form of meditation fosters a non-judgmental awareness of the mind, which can help promote a more positive attitude and an overall sense of well-being.
In addition to formal meditation practices, mindfulness can also be integrated into everyday life. One can practice mindful eating by focusing on the present moment and being fully engaged with the taste, texture, and smell of food. Mindful breathing can be practiced by taking a few deep breaths before responding to a stressful situation.
Mindfulness can also be incorporated into work, by taking breaks and focusing on the present moment, rather than getting caught up in multitasking. Mindfulness can even be applied to social interactions, by focusing attention on the person you are speaking with, rather than getting distracted by other stimuli.
